Fish species

So far the my darling web site has found records of 19 fish species in the darling river basin, fifteen native fish species and four introduced fish species. Some web sites suggest there may have been other species and hopefully we can add more fish species to our database.

Golden perch

Family: Percichthyidae (Freshwater Perches, Cods and Bass)
Other names: Yellow Belly, Callop, Freshwater Perch
Genus: Macquaria
Scientific name: Macquaria ambigua (Richardson, 1845)
Conservation status: Numbers have declined, although still present in good numbers in many locations
Known distribution: NSW, QLD, SA, VIC, NT

Silver perch

Family: Terapontidae (Grunters)
Other names: Black Bream, Grunter, Bidyan
Genus: Bidyanus
Scientific name: Bidyanus bidyanus (Mitchell, 1838)
Conservation status: Threatened Sadly all self sustaining populations are gone from the darling river system!
Known distribution: Silver perch were once widespread and abundant throughout the entire Murray-Darling Basin. Unfortunately silver perch have now declined close to the point of extinction in the wild. Only a few natural self sustaining populations still occur in their original range.

Freshwater catfish

Family: Plotosidae (Eel-tailed Catfishes)
Other names: Catfish, Eeltail catfish, Jewfish
Genus: Tandanus
Scientific name: Tandanus tandanus (T. L. Mitchell, 1838)
Conservation status:  Declining Sadly all self sustaining populations are gone from the darling river system!
 
Known distribution: Freshwater Catfish (Tandanus Tananus) were once widespread and abundant throughout the entire Murray-Darling Basin. Unfortunately nearly all these self sustaining populations have now disappeared from their original range.
